The History of Fei Hsiao-t'ung's Mind: Ethnos as a clue to his community study and ethnic study

我们对费孝通先生的理解通常有几个层次,例如从经济方面去讨论他的乡土工业,从社会方面去讨论他的“差序格局”,或从文化方面来关注他的“文化自觉”,但是这些研究大都对费孝通缺乏整体的关照。根据这一考虑,本文侧重从文化方面对他进行整体的理解,试图通过挖掘他文本中对绅士与巫的关系之论述,来看他的文化论的基本特征。这也是过去对他的文本考察不够重视的地方。本文将通过对他这些论述的重新理解,来寻找他的汉人社区研究和民族研究两块内容之间的学术关联。其中,史禄国的ethnos理论是本文想要重点讨论的一个角度。

Former studies about Fei Hsiao-t'ung usually had his thoughts discussed from the perspectives like his interests on economy，society and culture，which separately relating to village industry，“diversity-orderly structure”and“cultural self-consciousness”. Complementary to this kind of fragmentary researches，this paper tries to make an integrated comprehension to Fei from the perspective of culture. The author illustrates the inner connections between Fei's gentry study and magician discussion by reorganizing his relevant writings ignored before. Aiming to re-understanding Fei，the author takes effort to find the academic linkage between his community study and ethnic study. The Ethnos theory advocated by Shirokogoff is a crucial clue to stand by in this study.
