This is a case study of a settlement of floating population in Beijing know n as the “Henan Village” .The autho rs presented a rich reservoir of fieldw ork data , describing and analy zing the second stratification among the peasants under the double effects of the transition tow ard a market economy and the rigid system of urban and rural resident registration .The stratification , as the authors pointed out , is a result of the flow of rural labor force to metropolitans and their participation in the division of wo rk in modern industry .On the o ther hand , it is also restricted by the separate and closed sy stems of rural and urban resident registration .
