China has undergo ne unprecedented social changes since economic reform ,the theo retical issue of “State-society relation” becomes a vivid subject of recent published works.The ex pansion of the third sector beyond the state regimes in China has obtained much attention from the scholars at home and abroad , at least in the field of sociology .Based o n the understanding of the concept of the third sector and its ideological roots, the author attempts to analyze the impact of role changes of the state on the g row th of the third sector in reformed China.After interpreting the relationship between state , market and society, the author argues that three most important facto rs, i.e.political leg itimacy , financial autonomy and organizational capacity building definitely determine the g row th of the third secto r in temporary China.
