Labor Movement under Economic Globalization: Issues, Questions and Theories

Economic globalization since the 1970s has wide_ranging impacts on labor process, labor regime , labor rights and labor movement.The recurrence of sweatshops looms large the plights and challenges encountered by global labor.As a form of “ new social movement” focusing on global labor practices issue , anti_sweatshop or corporate codes of conduct movement rising in the 1990s has been recognized as the third way to labor rights protection and labor empowerment.Focusing on the development process of the U.S ._ based anti_sweatshop over the past decade , this paper examines the following three questions .Firstly , it begins with an analysis of the diversified actors and their agentsin the movement through an analytical lens of Karl Polanyi' s “ double movement” theory . Secondly, basing on an analytical framework drew from existing theories on social movement and labor movement , it examines features of the newly emerged anti_sweatshop movement which distinguish it from traditional labor movement .Finally , to initiate more labor studies with social movement perspectives, the paper raise some empirical and theoretical questions deserving future exploration, especially those concerning the promises and limits of anti_sweatshop movement as vehicle to protect and empower labor under globalization.
