Charity，Gospel and Nationalism in the Public Sphere: The leprosy relief in modern HangZhou

在医疗社会史领域,对于疾病与社会、文化乃至殖民主义、民族主义关系的研究,正在引起学术界的巨大兴趣。本文以近代杭州的麻风救治为例,旨在探讨福音医学与近代中国社会文化的关联性。文章认为,在近代中国,福音医学是麻风病救治的绝对主导,通过为麻风病患筑家园、求福音和谋国族,传教士为近代中国带来了不同于明、清时期中国麻风救治传统的卫生现代性,即传教士抛弃了中国明清时期的“强制隔离”制度,在“人道隔离”中,“疗身与疗灵”并举,使麻风病患在卫生慈善机构中得到有效救治与养老。

The disease’s relationship with social-culture，especially with colonialism and nationalism is catching more and more concern in the academia. This paper tries to explain the relationship of the missionary medical and Chinese social-culture by telling the story of the leprosy relief in modern Hangzhou. Missionary medical played a very important role in the leprosy relief of the Modern China. By building shelters， begging gospel and seeking national-state for the lepers，the medical missionaries brought the hygienic modernity to China which was different from the old tradition in Ming-Qing. In a word，they gave up the“forced-isolation institution”in Ming-Qing and introduced the“humanistic-isolation institution”for lepers，and to both relieve leper’s physical sufferings and christianize them.
